The Awards Program of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Planning Association was established to recognize individuals and achievements that make significant contributions to the practice and process of Comprehensive Planning in the State of Oklahoma. Three categories of Awards are established to provide an annual recognition of significant contributions to the professional practice of planning; to permit, when appropriate, the recognition of activities, events, contributions and support for significant planning achievements in the State of Oklahoma; and make special recognition of individuals and achievements of special note because of their long-term impact to the development of planning and the planning profession in Oklahoma. The three categories of Awards are: 1. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE: An award recognizing individuals engaged in the professional practice of planning whose leadership, activities, creativity, and dedication result in measurable contributions to the practice of planning, planning education, planning history, and the organization of planning in the State of Oklahoma. This is an annual award.
2. PLANNING ACHIEVEMENT: An award to recognize significant accomplishments that result from the sound application planning principals. It is conceivable that more than one award could be made in an award cycle or it could also result in no awards being made if the results are not of sufficient merit. This category is all encompassing and is intended as a means of recognizing special contributions to the physical setting; to give credit to special support of the planning profession; and, to recognize contributions to planning from a variety of sources. Individual planners, planning organizations, planning projects, planning documents, planning commissions, planning commission members, the media, planning activities, techniques, education etc., are all eligible for consideration in the category of award.
3. MEMORIAL AWARD (Joel Smith Award): An award reserved for special recognition of individuals or achievements that have impacted the development of professional planning, planning practice, planning education, planning theory, the organization of planning and enhancement of the physical setting on a scale having long-term beneficial results. This award will be used to recognize pioneering works, works which result in new directions in planning, or works which impact physical settings over a broad range of time and/or space, or individuals whose achievements and contributions to the planning profession have impacted the profession of planning on Oklahoma.
